About us

Kōshin Taiko is a Los Angeles-based taiko ensemble known for our intense and powerful performances on signature red okedo drums (rope-tightened drums). The two kanji (Japanese characters) that form our name, Kōshin, can be translated as the concepts of “bright light” and “one’s heart or spirit,” reflecting a commitment to bringing our vibrant spirits and hearts to every performance!

Founded in 1992 under the guidance of Master Etsuo Hongo Sensei, Kōshin continues to play with the values, experiences, and songs handed down to us, now led by founding member Virginia Minami. We are based at the Venice Japanese Community Center (VJCC) and take pride in being a community group with members of diverse ages, heritages, and levels of experience.

Kōshin Taiko regularly performs throughout Southern California, including annual appearances at the Los Angeles Marathon and Nisei Week in Little Tokyo.  We bring the thrilling sound and energy of taiko to a wide range of events, from school performances and city parades to cultural festivals and national sporting events. Come experience us by checking out our calendar below, contacting us directly, or following us on social media.
